The Blessed Candles
Every year the Church buys many (probably) hundreds of candles. Bits and stubs and left overs of the candles could go to waste – thrown away and put into landfill. One of the most expensive of all the candles is the ‘Pascal Candle.’ It is lit in nearly every service be it Eucharist, baptism, marriage or funeral. It begins its use for the year on Easter Sunday when an ordained person blesses it, lights it and carries it into the church to symbolise that Jesus, the Light of the
world has risen on that Easter morning; that light will never go out as Jesus’ light will never go out in our lives.
At the beginning of Lent we put the Candle away and a new one is purchased. Because the candle is so big there is always a lot of it left at the end of the year. Over the years we have accrued a lot of Pascal candles (All stored in the vestry cupboard!) In her day Jean Talbot melted down the candles and make new ones. But she has moved on. Then we thought – why don’t we use all this wax and reuse it to make more candles – little ones; ones that can be used on
the altar and to light St Francis and The Virgin Mary. So, we did!
We, the Green team wish always to reduce waste; reuse and recycle and making candles from old Pascal Candles fits all those criteria – so that’s what we are doing. We still make the candles for the altar but now we are making a variety of other candles; other shapes, sizes; colours and scents and we are selling them. Because the Pascal Candle was blessed in the first place, we are calling them ‘Blessed Candles’ as the Pascal Candle was blessed when it was first used. The relief on the candle provides the colour.
So if you want – we can make a special candle; a Blessed Candle just for you. You can choose the colour or leave it white; you can have it scented or not. Just ask.
